Cardioversion

What Is an Electrical cardioversion

Electrical cardioversion is a medical procedure that uses electrical energy to restore normal heart rhythm in patients with an abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia.

Cardioversion is usually performed as a day procedure in hospital, and typically takes only a few minutes. Under general anaesthesia, electrodes are placed on the chest, and a controlled electrical shock is delivered to the heart using a defibrillator to restore normal rhythm.

Electrical cardioversion is a safe and effective procedure that can quickly restore normal heart rhythm in many patients with arrhythmias. The success rate of the procedure depends on the type, severity and duration of the arrhythmia.

As with any medical procedure, there is a small risk of complications, which your doctor will discuss with you before performing the procedure.
