What Is An Echocardiogram?
A Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) is a type of echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound of the heart. It is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses ultrasound waves to produce images of the heart and its surrounding structures.
TTE is used to diagnose a range of heart conditions, including heart muscle thickening or dysfunction, raised intracardiac pressures, valvular disease, heart tumours, congenital heart disease, as well as aortic and pericardial disease. The images can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatments, such as surgery or medications.
During a TTE, a handheld ultrasound probe is placed on the chest. The probe transmits ultrasound waves into the chest, which reflect off the heart and produce echoes that are captured and used to produce images of the heart. The images can help doctors to evaluate the heart’s structure and function, including the size and shape of the heart chambers, the thickness of the heart wall, and the functioning of the heart valves.
TTE is a quick and painless test that usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour. No special preparation is required for the test, although you will be asked to remove any clothing or jewellery that may interfere with the sound waves.
Please shower before your appointment. Apply no moisturiser or powder, but underarm deodorant is allowed.
Ladies, please try and wear a top and bottom rather than a dress. A bare chest is required for the test, but a gown will be available for modesty.
TTE is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic test, and most patients experience no serious side effects. However, as with any medical test, there is a small risk of complications, such as an allergic reaction to the gel used on the skin or discomfort during the test. You will have an opportunity to discuss these risks and other concerns you may have before the test is performed.
