What Is A Holter monitor?
A Holter monitor is a type of portable electrocardiogram (ECG) that is performed to diagnose and monitor disturbances of heart rhythm (arrhythmias).
A Holter monitor consists of a small wearable device that is attached by wires to adhesive electrodes placed on the chest, and which continuously records the electrical signals produced by the heart and stores the data for analysis. At the end of the recording period, the data is downloaded and analysed in computer software to identify any arrhythmias.
Along with the diagnosis of arrhythmias, the information can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatments including medication and pacemakers.
The patient is free to carry out their normal daily activities while wearing the monitor, with the exception of water-based activities, including showering or bathing.
Holter monitoring is a safe and non-invasive test that does not cause any discomfort. However, as with any medical test, there is a small risk of complications, including skin irritation or more rarely, an allergic reaction to the electrodes.
Please shower prior to your appointment and wear a loose fitting top.
